Beauty Note | Emollient Ingredient

Humectant Ingredient

Emollient is the ingredient that can fill the space between the dead skin cells (corneocytes) in order to smoothen the skin surface, leaving the skin softer. On the other words, it helps in repairing damaged skin barrier.

Skin barrier composed of dead skin cells called corneocytes, which are held together by lipid matrix (lamellae). Without this lipid matrix, the skin barrier is weakened as the corneocytes get damaged and depleted. This not only induce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), it also lead to the entering of harmful foreign substance such as allergen, bacteria and irritants into deeper layers of the skin.

This can cause dryness, itching and irritation to the skin and may eventually lead to acne, eczema, aging and sensitiveness. In order to avoid this condition, emollient helps in filling the space where the corneocytes have been damaged and depleted. It is likely the replacement of the lipid matrix in order to bind the corneocytes back together into a nice solid layer. Therefore, it will minimize the trans-epidermal water loss and protect the skin from harmful foreign substance.
