How To Moisturize The Skin?

Moisturizing is one of the most crucial steps in taking good care of skin, which is after cleansing and before sun protecting. Taking a very simple way, moisturizer is the most regular product that been used to moisturize the skin besides toner/lotion and essence. However, this essential piece of the skin-care puzzle is always skipped due to the lack of the awareness on the importance of skin moisturization.

Skin hardly needs moisturization in order to prevent the entering of external foreign substances into the deep layers, so the skin will be at the healthiest state. But it is important to understand that moisturizing is not only about slapping the skin with the moisturizer, it also needs the correct ingredients depending what it needs and what it doesn't need. Otherwise, it may turn the skin into a bad disaster!

The most important thing to know is, moisturizer basically made up of 3 classes of ingredient that work together in giving and maintaining the skin moisture. Those three are:
- Ingredient that attracts water to the skin.
- Ingredient that prevent water loss from the skin.
- Ingredient that smoothen the skin surface, leaving the skin softer.

How To Moisturize The Skin?

Most of the moisturizer products nowadays already contain a blend of these three classes of ingredient. Lightweight moisturizer tends to have more humectant ingredients with small amount of occlusive and emollient ingredietns. Meanwhile, rich moisturizer tends to have more occlusive and emollient ingredients. Youjust need to choose the most perfect one for the skin.

Perfect moisturizer is a moisturizer that can give a balance humectant, occlusive and emollient ingredients to the skin, keeping the skin healthy, and the exact balance of these three classes of ingredient depends on the types of the skin.

  • Moisturizer for dry skin
Dry skin which tends to be rough, brittle and dull needs a heavier, oil-based moisturizer that contains humectant and more occlusive ingredients. Meanwhile for very dry skin which characterized by mild scaling or flakiness in patches, rough and blotchy feel, tightness, possible itchiness, sensitive to irritation, redness and infection risk, needs rich emollient ingredients in order to restore the damaged skin barrier, plus humectant and occlusive ingredients as well.

  • Moisturizer for oily skin
Oily skin has a thick sebum layer which lead to the appearances of enlarge and clearly visible pores, glossy shine look and also prone to acne and blemishes. Thick moisturizer with occlusive and emollient ingredients definitely is the worst enemy. This type of skin needs a water-based moisturizer that contains a lot of humectant ingredients. This kind of moisturizer will be light on the skin and does not feel too greasy.

  • Moisturizer for combination skin
Combination skin is the skin with two different skin type, where forehead, nose and chin may be oily but the cheeks can be dry or normal. Selecting the best moisturizer for combination skin is very challenging as there is no one-size-fits-all moisturizer for combination skin. Usually, use two different moisturizer, which is one for oily part and another for dry/normal part may be most efficacious.

  • Moisturizer for normal skin
Normal skin is a well balanced skin which is neither too oily nor too dry. Moisturizer with balanced humectant and occlusive ingredients should be the best one. The moisturizer should be neutral, light and non-greasy on the skin, means that it contains lightweight occlusive ingredients and enough humectant ingrdients.

  • Moisturizer for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin has a very weak protective skin barrier and immune function making it prone to asthma and allergies. It can happen to dry skin and oily dehydrated skin. Do choose the moisturizer for dry or oily skin, but, as sensitive skin is more easily irritated by certain ingredients such as fragrances and alcohols, look for the humectant, occlusive and emollient ingredients that carry soothing and calming properties. The moisturizer should be unscented and hypoallergenic.

Choosing the perfect moisturizer is not as easy as reading the article about it. And once you find the best one, do not get surprised if it shows a disagreement on the skin in another season. Yes, moisturizer follows the climate changes. Choosing the most perfect moisturizer is like a gradual long-life experiement. Everyone is always struggling in finding and discovering new best moisturizer in different seasons. Therefore, do not get stressed, always be open to try the new products and brand names. Just do not forget to always do a patch test first when welcoming new moisturizer to the skin.
